My Practicum 2021:
For my practicum I took the class PLCY213: The Foundations of Nonprofit Leadership & Social Innovation. This class focused on creating change in our communities and in the world. PLCY213 gave me many opportunities to work on my leadership skills and strengthen my ability to solve societal problems. In the class, we had many guest speakers, who were involved in the nonprofit workforce, come to the class and give important advice about leadership and inciting change.
I discovered my practicum by going through the list of available classes that count toward the practicum requirements. I picked the class that sounded the most interesting to me. Some advice I would give to a future Media Scholar is to have backup options incase your first idea of a practicum does not work out. I originally planned to have an internship with a media company, but my spot was not guaranteed so instead I took the class PLCY213 which fulfilled my practicum requirement. Having communication with your Scholar advisor is important because they will help you figure out the best option for completing your practicum.
In my practicum I learned the ins and outs of a nonprofit organization which can also be applied to other programs and/or jobs. I learned about the various ways to become involved in nonprofit work, the skills it takes to run a nonprofit, and the various ways that you can make a change in your community.
As a person, I have grown because I have discovered my passion for helping people and problem solving. As a student, I have grown because of this class because it inspired me to change my major from Early Childhood Education to Sociology. The class allowed me to learn about the issues that are affecting society and encouraged me to change my major in order to learn more. As a professional, I have met some amazing nonprofit workers and have had the chance to interview them and learn valuable lessons that will help me in my future work.
I chose to upload my Problem and Solution paper that I wrote this semester in my PLCY213 class. This paper is about the issue of the School-to-Prison Pipeline and how to combat the problem. I chose this paper as an example of how I have grown as a student and person because it was an informative paper to write. This paper changed my outlook on life and inspired me to learn more about societal issues and how to change them. It inspired me to change my major to Sociology because learning about the intersectionality that occurs in society and how it affects every group differently interested me. Now I would like to learn more about ways I can create change in my community with the knowledge I have from my Policy class and my new major.
I can apply my practicum experience to my life moving forward because I can use the leadership skills that I have been taught in order to lead a nonprofit organization one day or be a leader or manager in my future career. We learned how to balance work and humanitarian efforts, which will be helpful if I work in a sociology related career. I learned how to utilize different resources, people, and companies in order to further grow my ideas which will be useful in the future. Having the background knowledge of being able to innovate, create, utilize media, and leadership skills, I will be successful in managing and working through the opportunities that come to me in the future.
For the rest of my time at UMD, I plan to complete my Sociology requirements and continue to find topics that interest me. I plan to get involved more in the university and hopefully find an internship that will give me practice in the sociology workforce. My post graduation plans are to go to graduate school to get my Masters degree. I am considering Masters programs in law, public policy, or health care. I am unsure what career I would like to take up yet.
